or some time now brutality has been the vogue in literary espionage, reflecting the grim realities of our melodramatic age. In Ian Fleming's popular tales about the ineffable James Bond the brutality is combined with parody, sex, caviar and champagne. In John Le Carré's enormously successful "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" the brutality was combined with a harsh realism which stressed the repudiation of morality in an essentially immoral business. With no cries of pious alarm Mr. Le Carré managed to convey his distaste for the unpleasant methods of espionage while at the same time telling an engrossing spy story. It was an expert performance, but not quite as novel as most readers thought. Mr. Le Carré had tried out the same formula in an earlier but largely overlooked book. Today that early book is republished together with a detective story in one volume called "The Incongruous Spy."
