The most common reasons a Volkswagen Jetta won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

A bad main relay can cause problems like a no-start condition, unreliable vehicle ignition, an engine that won't stay running, and an illuminated check engine light. Relays are electronically-controlled switches. They connect or break paths in a circuit to control electric currents and their respective devices.

The power distribution center, or fuse block, located under the hood houses most or all of the vehicle's fuses and relays. It contains a relay for the ECM that is powered up when the ignition key is turned to the on position. This ECM power relay acts as a switch that supplies power to the ECM.

Usually, you will find two fuse boxes in the car. One is located under the hood and the other is found in the dashboard or near the steering wheel. The fuse under the hood protects important engine components and accessories like battery, ECU and cooling fan.

Remove the fuse from its holder. In some cases you may need a small screwdriver to unscrew the fuse holder cap. Look at the fuse wire. If there is a visible gap in the wire or a dark or metallic smear inside the glass then the fuse is blown and needs to be replaced.

You can usually spot blown fuses by locating a discolored fuse or a melted piece of metal. If your fuse box is labeled, you may be able to narrow down the fuses based on what part of your home lost power. Remove the blown fuse.
