My 1st grader son uses the Raz Kids website for reading (with quizzes to test comprehension) thought an access code his teacher gave him. My 4th grader son, who is verbal autistic and struggles with reading and especially comprehension, regularly asked to read and take quizzes on Raz Kids application; however the 1st grader books of his brother are too simple for my older son.
However, my fourth grader responds so well to Raz Kids' reading format andquizzes to test comprehension (which is an area of weakness for him)that we'd love for him to have access to Raz Kids. My older son's home OG reading tutor said that Raz Kids would be great for him.
However, my older son's special education teacher checked on this at my urging and she said that our school (they both attend Patrick Henry ES) only bought access for 1st graders.
Do any of you know how I could get (free) access to Raz Kids for my older son?
Thanks very much! Katherine

Katherine - I found the Raz Kids website online (https://www.raz-kids.com) and you can purchase a 'home subscription' for $99 per year. I'm also curious if you school has any recommendations for an alternative e guided reading subscription if they don't offer Raz Kids for beyond 1st grade.
I checked the Arlington County Public Library, and they have Tumble Books and BookFlix as audiobooks for kids - not sure if that is something comparable, but might be worth checking out: http://library.arlingtonva.us/collections/ecollection/ebooks/
Also, here is the link to the APS Library Services webpage, discussing their ebooks and eAudiobook collections.http://www.apsva.us/Page/1986

Katherine - ask the Special Ed teacher to double check with the reading specialist. Before our school had lots of RazKids subscriptions the reading specialist had a few logins that she was able to give out to kids. Also double check with your IT coordinator - they may know of some way to get a few extra subscriptions or to use a slot that maybe was purchased but isn't being used.

Katherine:
My son attends The Lab School and Raz Kids is big part of their daily reading practice at home. The reading difficulty goes up as the kids progress through the levels and it has been a great resource for us.
Good luck.

Thankfully, our school made it work for my older son with an extra subscription, so he can read some books online too. (They literally worked this out overnight, I'm really impressed.) I'll also check out the additional resources you suggested.
Thanks very much, Donna!

Students only need the teacher username and their own password to access Raz-Plus from home. They don't need the teacher password, which would give them inappropriate access to the management tool.
Log into Kids A-Z as your child to request access. Click the "Parents" link at the top right of the page and follow the instructions to provide an email address. Your child's teacher will need to approve the email address before you can see your child's information.
If a parent requests access from their student's account, a red icon appears next to the student's name on the Roster page. Click the icon to approve parent access.
Some of our firsties were telling the story by reading the pictures, while others were able to listen to the story being read aloud. But all were eager to tell us what they had read! As I mentioned earlier, Raz Kids is based on the student's reading level.EPIC! is based on the child's age and interest.
With technology at their fingertips, through the Raz-Kids Mobile App, students are encouraged to read anytime, anywhere on their iPad, Android, or Kindle Fire tablets. And with a subscription to Raz-Kids or the Reading Solution, it's FREE!
By combining the power of both Reading A-Z and Raz-Kids in one instructional interface, Raz-Plus provides a stronger connection between what is being taught and what students are practicing on their own. Provide standards-aligned reading instruction with more than 50,000 resources that develop key 21st century skills.
Raz-Kids is a good tool for tracking students' reading progress, but it's only one piece in a comprehensive reading program. It'll be a great support for the earlier grades, where the texts can provide great practice in both fiction and nonfiction reading.
Students earn stars for completing assessments and other activity on the site. You can award bonus stars after scoring assessments. Students spend earned stars to personalize their avatar in the Avatar Builder and their Raz Rocket.
Students have access to the Raz-Plus assignments the teacher has made for them from the Reading Planet (in the Primary Portal) or from the Assignment tab (in the Intermediate Portal) on the student homepage. The My Assignment area has individual activities your teacher has assigned to you.
