Last time FIL stayed at our house overnight, our 3 year old son was being a bit rebellious at bedtime and getting out of bed. He had a late night and it was probably 10pm at this time. We had been putting him back in his bed for a couple hours. He had been fine for about 20 minutes, then he started calling out, "Graaaandad graaandad" in a whiny voice. We were just going to ignore him but FIL said, "I'll go put my pjs on and then lay with him." Me and husband didn't stop him though I wanted to but I didn't verbalise it.
He got in bed with toddler. They were snuggling and giving "eskimo" kisses. There is a baby monitor so I could see.
He fell asleep eventually but FIL stayed in there and slept too until I told hubby to go wake him up.
But in the morning he was back in there he said toddler had woke up after we went to sleep and was calling for him.

The next day, FIL was going to get dressed in the washroom and toddler followed. He got distracted on the way and FIL said, "Are you coming?" He followed again. He stood in the doorway. FIL said, "I'm closing the door - are you in or out?" Toddler was kind of getting in the way of FIL closing the door. I didn't want him to be in there so I came from the other room and said, "Come on, let's go out." FIL said, "No he's ok he's ok he's ok he's ok." And I didn't want to leave him but I felt pressured and I let him stay in there while he got dressed. Toddler sprayed FIL's cologne in his eye (FIL is always bragging that 3 yr old wants to be just like him and wear his cologne).

Later, FIL was going to pee. He asked if toddler was coming. Toddler followed and again was being slow in the door. Hubby said, "Toddler, let's give Grandad some privacy." FIL says, "It's ok, he just sits on the stool and watches me." I said, "Err no we need to teach him boundaries."
FIL said, "It's fine. I'm his Grandad. These guys (hubby and siblings) followed me everywhere." I said, "It's other people. He's going to think this is okay with other adults," FIL said, "Oh he knows he can't do this with other people." Then turned to toddler and said, "You know you can't go to the bathroom with other people, right?" I interrupted and said, "No, he's a child, he can't make that distinction," and I picked him up and took him out of the bathroom. Hubby said, "Yeah, that's true." Toddler sat on the floor and looked a bit sad and hubby said, "We need to give people privacy in the bathroom but you can give Grandad a big hug when he comes out"
FIL no longer allows toddler to come to bathroom with him.

FIL tells toddler he loves him every few minutes all day long. Usually repeatedly again and again. "I love you, I love you, you know. I love you." FIL also asks if toddler loves him several times a day
FIL gives money and toys in excess. He once gave $80 in coins for toddler's piggy bank. Regularly spends hundreds on toys.
When we're at FIL'S house, FIL constantly asks toddler if he's having so much fun, if he wishes he could stay forever, and if he wants to live at FIL's house.
FIL always wants to take Toddler to the bathroom when he needs to go, and always wants to wipe his bum when he poos.
FIL always rushes to be the one to comfort Toddler when he's hurt, even if I'm closer and on my way.
FIL has designated his spare bedrooms as "Toddler's room." But he sleeps in there when toddler is there so that me and hubby can have FIL'S bed.

What are your thoughts?
Would you feel different if I replaced FIL with MIL?

I think aspects of this genuinely made me feel uncomfortable to read let alone handle, but at the same time I know I still follow my grandma or mom to the bathroom and I’m mid 20s. I think the eagerness of your FIL seems concerning, I understand wanting to be the awesome grandparent and give your grandchildren the world, but to this extent may require extra monitoring or a hard conversation. My 3yo follows my mom to the bathroom, but it’s all pure innocence and I trust her and all her intentions 1000%, I would trust my MIL the same though they are more bathroom private than how I grew up. However I would feel more uncomfortable with my father or FIL merely because they’re men and statistically shown to be more predatory. I would honestly just explain why it makes you uncomfortable without accusing him because it could all be through innocence, you never know. Hold your boundaries! After all, you’re the parent! I know my moms quick to the kids with injury or happy to take them potty, but as I said, I trust her and her intentions wholeheartedly

@lizzardliz,

You put your finger on the issue. It's the eagerness that bothers me. They have respected the boundaries I have set previously. I completely trust them not to be predatory but I feel like this is grooming behavior regardless of their intentions. Does that make sense?

@Simone7891,

it absolutely does make sense. I’d anything, set the bathroom/bedtime boundaries and be extra good about reminding your son when FIL is not around without mentioning your FIL directly. Waiting to go to your son when he’s hurt and instead letting him decide if he needs the support, discuss the importance of what it means to keep your body private, nobody should be touching you in these areas unless mom or dad need to to wipe bum or there is a genuine health issue. Stuff like we don’t force hugs or kisses too. I’m happy they respect boundaries, if anything you can follow up your boundaries through trying explaining you’re trying to teach privacy to protect your son in the future! As an individual who was groomed, I greatly appreciate you protecting your son starting now!

@lizzardliz,

I am the same even with my son I am definitely more uneasy if my father or fil (who aren’t very hands on thankfully compared to my mum and MIL) would do potty duties or sleep with my son! My father and fil are very hands off with my children like they will give them a cuddle but that’s the extent and I’m okay with that ❤️ my mum and MIL on the other hand help out with potty and help bath my kids and help put the kids to sleep (they took on most of those duties when I grew up and so that’s probably why I feel more comfortable)! Always trust your gut and if you feel uncomfortable get your husband to start setting boundaries as it’s easier for him to have those conversations

Your feelings of discomfort are completely valid. It’s one thing for a grandparent to be willing to help out with potty tasks if needed or to allow a kid to follow them into the bathroom if the kid wanted to follow (I could see my mom doing this with my toddler), but it’s definitely odd that fil seems to be insisting toddler tags along.

How does your husband feel? The mentions of him makes it seem like he’s supporting your boundary setting. This seems like a conversation he needs to have with his dad.

It sounds like your fil is trying really, really hard to win the title of best grandparent. It would make me really uncomfortable too, whether is was fil or mil doing these things.

I think your feelings are valid and you need to listen to them. If you feel uncomfortable with anything, don’t stay quiet to be polite. It’s our job to protect our kids and to set boundaries. Personally, this would annoy me so much — even if this was my MIL! I’m very vocal around my in laws and my own parents about my boundaries. My MIL had a problem with it at the beginning but she knows now that she needs to respect them or she simply just won’t be around us very often. My husband and I have had lots of conversations about this and we both feel the same way. A lot of it has to do with our own upbringing and experiences. There is an Instagram account that teacher grandparents about boundaries. It’s really good and comes from a grandma herself. I’ll find it and add it here.

I think your gut response as his mother are right. This would be absolutely to much for me (I am a mother to a three year old boy) I would go with your gut and keep a very close eye and make sure boundaries are there. He may be the FIL, but he needs to respect the mother of his grandson decisions.

Always trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem right, then trust what you feel. As a new parent with my older son, I didn’t trust my instincts and the situation did not turn out well for my son. Set hard boundaries and enforce them consistently. If FIL doesn’t want to follow then he can’t be alone with your son.
