Foundations Courses
Foundations Courses: Must earn “C” or better grade in these courses to take BE 2700, BE 3800.
A grade of "C" or better in MA 2160, CH 1150 and PH 2100 is required as a departmental pre-requisite for BE 2700 Signals and Systems. Students that receive a CD or lower in any of these classes must retake them.

Pre-requisite and Co-requisite Courses
Pre-requisite courses are noted by a plain arrow, or located over the representative class on flowchart. The pre-requisite course must be successfully completed prior to taking the subsequent course. Concurrent pre-requisites are noted by a (C) within the arrow and may be taken at the same time, although it is not necessary to take these courses together if the pre-requisite course is completed first. The pre-requisites for BE 4901 are: BE 3700, BE 3350, BE 3800 and BE 4900. Co-requisite courses are courses that must be taken together in the same semester. Classes with co-requisites must be registered for at the same time (i.e. University Chemistry CH 1150 and CH 1151).
Students Earning a "C" or "D" Grade
Students earning a "CD" or "D" grade in MA1160/1161: PH2110 (University Physics Workshop, 1cr) is a required co-requisite for PH2100, which will be added to the spring credit total (17->18cr), adjustments may have to be made.
Mathematics
Students are placed into an initial math course based on ACT/SAT math score, or a math placement exam score for credit (AP, IB, CLEP). MA1160 (4 credits) or MA1161 (5 credits) satisfy the Calculus I requirement. MA2321 Linear Algebra and MA3521 Differential Equations are taken in the same semester as an accelerated course (total 4cr), the first half of the semester is MA2321 and then rolls into MA3521 for the second half. MA2320 and MA3520 are offered as full semester courses for students taking these courses in separate semesters. All function as equivalents (i.e. MA2320 or MA2321 and MA3520 or MA3521) for pre-requisite purposes.
Engineering Fundamentals
ENG 1001 (2 credits) + ENG 1100 (2 credits) are equivalent to ENG 1101 (3 credits). ENG1002 or passing spatial visualization test is required for ENG 1001 and ENG 1101 as a concurrent pre-requisite. ENG 1002 or passing the spatial visualization test is also a pre-requisite for ENG 1102. MA 1160/1161 is a concurrent pre-requisite for ENG 1101, and MA 1031 or MA 1032 are concurrent pre-requisites for ENG 1001. MA 1160/1161 is a non-concurrent pre-requisite for ENG 1102.
UN 1025 Global Issues Language Option (substitution)
3 credits of 3000-level or higher modern language may be substituted directly for UN 1025. A list of approved courses is located on the Modern Language webpage. Any students with previous language experience in Spanish, French, German, or Mandarin must take the Modern Language Online Placement Test.
General Education Requirements (24 total credits)
Required courses are UN 1015-Composition (3 credits), UN 1025-Global Issues (3 credits), a Critical & Creative Thinking course (3 credits), a Social Responsibility & Ethical Reasoning course (3 credits), and 12 HASS (Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences) credits. The 12 total credits of HASS must include a minimum of 3 credits each in Communication/ Composition, Humanities/Fine Arts and Social & Behavioral Science. 6 credits must be 3000 level or higher. No more than 3 credits may be used from the HASS Restricted List. All 3000 level or higher HASS courses require UN 1015 and UN 1025 as non-concurrent prerequisites.
Technical Electives (12 total credits)
Any 3000+ level course in the College of Engineering (BE, CM, CEGE, EE, MEEM, MSE) may be used by BME students for technical elective credits. Special topics courses (BE 4930, BE 4000, etc.) must be approved on an individual basis. See our recommended technical elective list on BME advising page for recommended classes / emphasis areas. Science elective (3 total credits): Any 2000+ level course in the College of Sciences and Arts (CH, BL, EH, PH, MA).
Free Elective (total 3 credits)
Any credit 1000-level or above, not on the co-curricular activities list, and not non-repeatable duplicated or equivalent courses. Transfer credits, AP credits, cooperative education credits, lab recitation credits can also be used as free electives.
Co-curricular (Physical Education)
Three units (or six half credit units) are required for graduation. These units will be included as earned hours and may be used to determine full-time enrollment status. These are in addition to the 128 total credits required for the BSBME. Co-curricular list is available online. These units are graded pass/fail and are not included in credit hours used for calculation of any grade point averages (cumulative, engineering, or departmental).
Transfer, Advanced Placement, or Study Abroad
Transfer, Advanced Placement, or study abroad courses are not included in credit hours used for GPA calculations. Transfer credit is awarded for Michigan Tech equivalent course work only if a grade of "C" or better (2.00/4.00) or equivalent is earned at a transfer institution. Study abroad credit – which is considered Michigan Tech credit for residency purposes – will be awarded by International Programs and Services based on passing a course according to equivalent international standards. Advanced Placement credit is awarded according to published AP Exam score standards (also IB and CLEP).
Senior Design substitutions
Students may pursue senior design capstone projects in another engineering department (EE, MSE, EE, MEEM) with prior project approval and signatures. Students must be "senior design ready" in BME by completing BE 4901 pre-requisites (BE 3350, BE 3700, BE 3800 and BE 4900) prior to taking a BE 4901 substitute. When substituting Enterprise (ENT) for senior design, the following courses must be taken: ENT3950, ENT3960 ( for BE4901), both taken fall and spring of third year; ENT 4950 and ENT 4960 (for BE 4910) taken fall and spring of fourth year. Forms from both Enterprise and BME departments must be filled out with signatures from project manager(s) and BME department chair. Please meet with your academic advisor first.

BE 3701 - Biomedical Instrumentation Lab

BE 3550 - Fluid Mechanics
This course introduces fundamental fluid mechanics principles in a unified fashion so that students can describe biological fluid problems in precise mathematical language. Topics include nature of fluids, hydrostatics, differential and integral equations about conservation of mass and momentum, dimensional analysis and various types of flow.
