Best versions of Rayman 1 and 2?
- Quote
Postby ZenErik »
I've never played a Rayman game, but Rayman Origins looks awesome. However, I am not sure I will have the money for Origins any time soon. So, maybe I'll try one of the first two games in the series first.
What are the best versions of Rayman 1 and 2? Which platform is best for each game? Just curious as to what the popular opinion is. Thanks!

both games are good, but if i have to pick one it will be the first one. The first Rayman is available on GBA, Jaguar, Saturn, PC, PS1, etc. probably the best version are tie between the Saturn and the Jaguar IMO.

Rayman 2 for Dreamcast is perhaps the best version.

Save your money for rayman origins, best rayman imo.
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

Saturn for 1 and dreamcast for 2 probably.
Rayman gold for the pc has a level editor though.
Rayman 2 for pc can be run in extemely high resolutions, but lacks the extra details of the dc version.

I'm interested in the question myself, so can you maybe elaborate on the "extra details" the DC version has? It definitely sounds like a coin toss between that and the PC version to me.

The DC version also has higher resolution, more detailed, textures.
They added some extra tweaks to levels.
I believe the DC version also has a higher polygon count.
It's got four player minigame stuff too.
EDIT:I may be off about the textures. I didn't have a very good graphics card in the comp I played the game on and its been a while.
EDIT:After watching a video I think I'm right.
EDIT:
Go 10 second into this pc version video and about 30 seconds into this DC version video and look at the grass in the level.

For Rayman 1, Saturn and Playstation have only negligible differences, so that's more of a preference, though I'd say that either one would be the platform of choice for the game. The Playstation version will be a bit cheaper and easier to find, though the Saturn version is by no means expensive. The PC version may be superior to these ports, but I'm unfamiliar with it, other than the fact that it has a level editor, and a selection of extra fan-made levels.
The original Jaguar version of it actually has some minor changes from what I've read, beyond of course the lack of CD based audio, so if you have such an inkling, the Jaguar version may be worth checking into.
Interestingly, the GBA version is actually a pretty amazing port of the Playstation version, and captures damn near the whole game into a slightly smaller screen, and of course with the brutal difficulty slightly reduced.
So many choices! It's a fantastic, though incredibly difficult, game though, so give it a try!
My Want List!
Consoles: Sega Master System, NES Toploader, Genesis/32X, Sega CDX, SNES, 3DO FZ-1, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PS2, Nintendo Gamecube, Xbox Halo Edition, Wii, PS3
Handhelds: Atari Lynx, Sega Nomad, Neo Geo Pocket Color, GBC (Atomic Purple, Pokemon Edition), GBA (Pink OG, Silver SP, Spongebob SP+), DS (Phat, iXL), 3DS, PSP (1000, Go)

I forgot to say this earlier, but some pc versions of rayman apparently don't have the full soundtrack.
