Best Version of Original Rayman?

Postby DonSilvestre »

Sup dudez -

I'm a pretty die hard 2D platforming junkie. I realized the other day that despite my 600+ game collection I have never even so much as seen the original Rayman in action. I have Rayman 2: Revolution for my PS2 and figured I should probably see where this franchise came from, especially since I love the platforming genre. I know it came out for Jaguar (which I don't have) but I'm wondering if there's a difference between the Saturn and PS1 versions - or if those versions are any worse or better than the Jaguar version. I know I could also get it for gameboy advance but that seems like it would definitely be stripped down. Any thoughts? Thanks!

The Saturn version has gorgeous colours, I haven't however played the Playstation one to compare.

Got a link with a head to head for all three versions.

Saturn version pretty much kicks ass, it doesn't mention it but i heard in the past that the saturn version also has extra sound effects or at least ones that were taken out for the ps1 release, im not sure though and the link doesn't mention it.

My $0.02, I would say go with the PSOne version. And I rarely say "go with" and "sony" in the same sentance. But for me what draws me to these 2D cartoon games is the background matches the forground.

So if your a fan of Astal, which I love, then go with Sony's version ...

The Saturn and PSX versions are "better" than the Jaguar version because they have slight (as in very) graphical enhancements, and CD audio...but...

I'm going to have to go with the Jaguar version. Back in the day it was a showcase game for the Jag and it was a highly anticipated title when it was first shown. It was in development so long that by the time it came out Rayman was already a familiar face and sort of a "mascot" for the Jag which up til that point didn't have any stand out platforming games.

That page someone linked to doesn't point out all the changes between the Jag and other ports of the game. The changes are minor....there were just a few tweaks to the stages when the game was ported to the disc based systems.

As for graphics...well you aren't going to notice a difference unless you really look for it. A lot of people claim the Jaguar version is the best looking of the bunch while that random web page says it is the worse. I've played the game on all three systems and they all look pretty much the same to me.

Control: Same boat. It is tight no matter which console you play it on. I do prefer the Saturn pad for this game though.

At any rate there really isn't a "best" version of this game imo.

O and don't forget there was a version released for the PC a long side the Jaguar version! Best Version of Original Rayman? (5)

My advice is not to hunt for the best,
but what is more affordable, available, and reliable .

Unless it is significantly worse from one platform to another(say Bayonette 360 vs ps3) even then its not THAT much of a worry.

OR

unless you are some one who really cares about this stuff and is a perfectionist in collection

That's a good point regarding searching for what's available - that being said I wanted to make sure the PS1 and Saturn versions weren't significantly different or worse from the Jag version, as I do plan on someday hopefully getting a jag. After I thought about it, it probably makes the most sense to get it for PS1 as I have my PS3 hooked up to our good TV so I could play it upstairs in my living room rather than on the small tube TV down in my game dungeon which is where my Saturn will be hooked up this weekend.

I'm a perfectionist to a degree. I like owning the "best" version of a game available on the systems I have. I re-bought RE4 for Wii even though I had the Gamecube one so I could have it full screen and have the extras that they added to the PS2 version for example. I hate buying a game and finding out later a different version is better.

I own the ps1 and imo, the controller is suitable for it.
