Ice Conditions Cooks Bay March 3, 2009

If you are coming up fishing this weekend, hope for some snow on top if you are driving a sled. This has been a really unusual winter in ontario. January we had more snow and doubled our ice thickness more quickly than we have ever seen on the ice. Now, as of this post the ice surface is completely snow free and generally on the whole bay 18 or so inches thick. The mild spell with rain that we had the last week did not effect the ice thickness, all it did was take the snow cover off. Since then, all we’ve had is brutally cold weather, no snow, and blue sky days. Under high pressure it has been blowing cold winds down on us from the far north. One had to watch for frostbite in the wind over the last 3 days. With the cold the ice has been buckling, shifting, and moving. Be aware that pressure cracks have developed and are active. Not so much in cooks bay but in the bigger portion of south lake simcoe. Drive slowly, and take care. Be aware of where you are. Whitey
