Sunday Jan 27/2008 Fishing update
The bite was on and off this weekend, sometimes there was a bit of a low. Saturday morning started off slow but got better as the morning progressed. Afternoon was spotty but we still managed to get some fish. Sunday was the opposite, started off with a bang early morning but waned in the afternoon. Still some schools coming through though. Had about 12 pike caught on Saturday and half as many on Sunday. Some decent sized perch were caught, but there was a lot of culling. Jigs or just plain hooks tipped with minnows worked well. Most pike were caught on the same rig as fishing for perch. Did not have any complainers, all and all it was a good weekend out there. As the picture indicates, there is snow on top the ice, around 4 inches. Mostly 10 to 11 inches of ice in the area we are working. We made about 4 to 5 inches of ice in the last 8 days or so. We work the east side Keswick 3/4 north and 1/2 mile west of Glenwoods Avenue. You should not find any less than 7 inches of ice anywhere on cooks bay up to at least the area of Roches Pt and DeGrasse point. Beyond that, there is big water – it is frozen but we have no idea on thickness. You will have to check with operators up that way for information. It appears from all reports that the whole lake has closed up. We cannot comment on activities in areas of the big lake. Cooks Bay was really busy this weekend on our side, lots of visitors in our camp. We ask that when people come over in sleds, stay back so you don’t scare the fish. Got a bit of mild weather forecasted then back down to cold. This will not effect our operation. As always, be very careful, ice is never safe! Never go alone and make sure you check with operators in the area you are going. Whitey
