March 9, Ice Conditions and Catching on Cooks Bay!
Ice Conditions: With the recent mild temps we have lost a bit of ice. What was 18 inches is now down to 16 inches, and two of the top 16 inches were soft today. Should firm back up again tonight. The ice surface is completely bare. Great for ATV’s or Argos. Cooks bay has no open water but a lot of the small creeks and small culverts are running hard and fast into the bay, just stay away from shore and you’ll be fine. The ice has not yet started to pull back from shore. It looks like we will be going mobile from March 15 to the end of the month. Strictly Argos and the tents, no jeep! In the last week or so I have frequented Willow Beach quite often, and managed some whitefish. Up there I measured the ice on Sunday and found it to be only 15 inches thick. This is probably the lean and mean for pretty well all of lake simcoe. It is this writers advice that no one go out there with cars or trucks, only snowmobiles, ATV’s or Argos. Last week in the cold snap that we had for 3 to 4 days, the ice buckled in several locations, at shore and out on the lake. That was the cold snap. Now with the milder weather the ice has retracted in some areas, and you may have to travel over an open crack anywheres from a foot to four feet wide, mostly in the areas close to shore. Never go out alone, always take a buddy with you. Drive slowly so you can see these cracks. Tight lines, I hope this finishes off your season safely.
Catching: We moved our huts in shallower last Wednesday, and have been really pleased with the results. You can see them on our site at www.simcoefishingadventures.com The pattern has changed slightly since Saturday, with the onset of the full moon and a bunch of fronts that hit us, catching has dropped off slightly. We had a few huts out there today. Fast and furious for the first 3 hours, got spotty for an hour and a half after that, and then they came back on after lunch. It was a minnow bite today. We are looking forward to finishing off our season on March 14. This year, because of how the dates fall, we will host clients on customer appreciation day on Saturday March 14. We are not taking bookings on Sunday March 15 as it is huts off day.
PS. As mentioned in a previous post, we will offer hut rentals with Simcoe Fishing Adventures in the 2010 winter season.
Make the most of your last weekend, be safe! Whitey
