Most people that we had out today had a great day! Especially the two gentlemen in the video. These folks from London Ont fished with me last year and really enjoyed it. It was a great day to be out! Relocated our whole fishing camp again for the 3rd time this season! Right now we have a ton of fish under us but you have to pick through them to put the size you like in your bucket. With the conditions we have now, this trend should last for another week or so. We are fishing cooks bay on 15″ of really good ice. Busy weekend coming. Still openings for Sunday! Ice surface is snow covered with soft drifts. Everyone is parking on Glenwoods ramp as it is good ice! See the burger and hot dog guy at the ramp! Great deal for hot food during your outing! Cheers, stay safe, Whitey

Got the huts on a really good spot now on Cooks Bay, no stop action all day long. Just about everything working out there today. The key was to have either a spoon on to flash them and bring them over, or have a heavy jig on like a rapala to stir up the bottom, and IN they came! Huts we had today did very well.
Ice conditions: We are on 14″ of really good black ice. Surface is snow covered with some hard drifts. That may change in the next few days as the mild weather comes in. Overall good for snow machines and ATV’s. You can now get burgers and hot dogs at Glenwoods Avenue at the ramp…come hungry! Be safe, Whitey

Well folks, that’s a wrap! Simcoe Fishing Adventures has officially ended our 2009 Ice fishing season. This year posed many challenges in hunting and finding the elusive perch, but we worked hard to put our clients on fish. We hope that everyone enjoyed their outings with us this year. We are also very pleased to report that we continue to have a great safety record, with everyone getting out and back safely regardless of conditions. This year we reported that Whitey may go with guided fishing only next year, but we have decided to continue as an operator and will offer the same services for the 2010 hard water season. This is mostly due to the many notes and comments we received from clientele asking us to stick with it! We appreciate all of the nice feedback very much.

The last pics loaded on our site are of our last group of clients from the USA. They had a very productive visit with us and we can only say that there is something magical about late ice! Where were all of those hogs hiding?

Thanks again to all of the great people who continue to come out with us every season. We very much appreciate your patronage. Wishing everyone a great soft water season for 2009. Whatever sport you enjoy, be safe! We will be in touch during 2009-10 freeze up!

For those of you coming from afar, as of today we still have 15 inches of ice on all of cooks bay. Bare in mind that there are creeks and rivers running into the shoreline which may make areas adjacent to shore unpredictable. Once you are out on the main ice sheet, you will not have any problems either walking or ATV’ing. The ice has started to pull away from shore slightly therefore the on and off could be problematic, unless you have an Argo. The ice has started to honeycomb. It will not support the weight it did two weeks ago so forget about cars and trucks. The surface is void of snow so forget about snow machines. If you are going, never go alone…go with a buddy and check with a local operator especially at this time of year. We will update until March 31. Stay safe! Whitey

Late ice fishing has been great! These clients from the US were more than happy with yesterday and todays catch. You could not ask for a better time to be catching perch on lake simcoe. We cannot always guarantee that we can get out there on late ice, but with our Argos we can always do it safely. Safety is not an issue right now as we are still out there on 15 inches of ice. Even though the ice is badly honey combed and chrystalized, it is still sufficient to get out there with Argos and get fish. We thank our clients for making the journey from the US and are extremely glad that it has been worth it! Tight lines, Whitey

Ice Conditions: With the recent mild temps we have lost a bit of ice. What was 18 inches is now down to 16 inches, and two of the top 16 inches were soft today. Should firm back up again tonight. The ice surface is completely bare. Great for ATV’s or Argos. Cooks bay has no open water but a lot of the small creeks and small culverts are running hard and fast into the bay, just stay away from shore and you’ll be fine. The ice has not yet started to pull back from shore. It looks like we will be going mobile from March 15 to the end of the month. Strictly Argos and the tents, no jeep! In the last week or so I have frequented Willow Beach quite often, and managed some whitefish. Up there I measured the ice on Sunday and found it to be only 15 inches thick. This is probably the lean and mean for pretty well all of lake simcoe. It is this writers advice that no one go out there with cars or trucks, only snowmobiles, ATV’s or Argos. Last week in the cold snap that we had for 3 to 4 days, the ice buckled in several locations, at shore and out on the lake. That was the cold snap. Now with the milder weather the ice has retracted in some areas, and you may have to travel over an open crack anywheres from a foot to four feet wide, mostly in the areas close to shore. Never go out alone, always take a buddy with you. Drive slowly so you can see these cracks. Tight lines, I hope this finishes off your season safely.

Catching: We moved our huts in shallower last Wednesday, and have been really pleased with the results. You can see them on our site at www.simcoefishingadventures.com The pattern has changed slightly since Saturday, with the onset of the full moon and a bunch of fronts that hit us, catching has dropped off slightly. We had a few huts out there today. Fast and furious for the first 3 hours, got spotty for an hour and a half after that, and then they came back on after lunch. It was a minnow bite today. We are looking forward to finishing off our season on March 14. This year, because of how the dates fall, we will host clients on customer appreciation day on Saturday March 14. We are not taking bookings on Sunday March 15 as it is huts off day.
PS. As mentioned in a previous post, we will offer hut rentals with Simcoe Fishing Adventures in the 2010 winter season.
Make the most of your last weekend, be safe! Whitey
